Kerala God's own country, with the Arabian sea on
the west the western ghats towering on the east and India's number one literate
state. A slender green silver of land clinging to the south western flank of the
Indian penisula. The State has benn in the forefront in terms of the
education and health services. It has the highest rate of literacy, lowest rate
of infant morality and the leading female to mail ratio in the country. The
entire state of kerala is tourist destination and at every corner of this state
one can experience something new. Kerala enjoys unique geographic features that
have made it one of the most sought after tourism destination. A long shoreline
with serene beaches. Tranquil stretches of emerland backwaters. Lush hill
station
and exotic wildlife.
Agricultural contributes most to the state's income in the primary sector.
Kerala major sources of exports are agro-based and traditional like coir and
cashew, as well as marine products, and manpower. In spices, pepper is the
single most important product with kerala being the largest producer and
exporter of black pepper. Cardomom and ginger are also exported there.
There
is no unanimity among historians about the history of ancient kerala. Much of
the history is in myths centres around the legend of Parasurama the warrior
sage who is regarded as the incarnation of Vishnu. the most famous legend
associated with kerala is legend of Parashurama. the creator of the world
according to Hindu mythology. The story goes like this Parashurama annihilated
21 shatriyas and wanted a place to perform his penance. the gods offered
to give him a land of his choice. Parashurama hurled his axe over the sea and
asked the sea to retreat over the area covered by the axe, the land emerged
from those receding water and this how kerala emerged. Parashurama converted
the Namboodiris a non brahmin caste and settled them in 64 villages and
appointed a king. The ancient city of Carmagnole then called Muzhiris. The
decendents of these kings fromed the chera dynasty which ruled for next 200
years. the next come the Perumals, sea faring kings that controlled the
Muzhiris till 200 BC. the chera empire's rule was the Golden era the
local kings divided the state between themself. The
Dutch were aware of the Portuguese geting power so they approached the
king of Calicut with view to expell the Potuguese from Kerala. The Dutch
defeated the Portuguese and establish their hold over the Cochin and Cannanore
estabising their monopoly of Trade. They introduced new techniques in dyeing
agriculture ,etc. The British rule shifeted their administration from Bombay
to Madras in 1800.The British also introduced new technology new weapons,
etc,. But the Paliyath Achan of Cochin and Raja of Kottyam already started
revolting against the British. Kerala was very actively involved in fredom
movements, like "The Mappila Lahala", in 1912. Kerala was motivated by
Gandhiji's Non-violant and started to agitate against the British. Dacade
after the freedom struggle India gained independence in 1947. Kerala was
declared state November 1956 and Trivendram its new capital. The state of
Kerala was frist state in India to have communist government mandate.
